Education

Primary and Secondary Schools

The Ogdensburg School District, employs over 300 persons in a system of about 3,000 students. There are several elementary schools. Ogdensburg Free Academy is the only high school. The student to teacher ratio is about 14 to 1.

The Board of Co-operative Educational Services (B.O.C.E.S.) offers vocational and occupational training to youth and adults; basic education, high school equivalency programs and special educational programs for handicapped students are available. Ogdensburg's Northwest Tech B.O.C.E.S. offers 15 programs of study.

Higher Education

Six institutions of higher learning serve St. Lawrence County. Yearly enrollment totals nearly 14,000 students.

Clarkson University, (Potsdam) an independent co-educational university offering undergraduate and graduate programs with an emphasis on engineering.

Potsdam College (State University of New York), offers undergraduate and graduate programs in liberal arts, music and teacher education.

St. Lawrence University, (Canton) an independent, liberal arts college offering undergraduate and graduate programs.

Canton College of Technology, (Canton) offers two year associate degrees in business, science, technical fields, public and health services.

Mater Dei College, (Ogdensburg) a private, two-year co-educational college, offering associate degrees in arts, science and applied arts.

Wadhams Hall Seminary College, (Ogdensburg) a private religious educational institution. All graduates receive a bachelors in philosophy in preparation for priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church.

Culture, Recreation Parks

Ogdensburg's proximity to the Thousand Islands, Adirondacks and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec greatly enhance our recreational and cultural options.

The Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg houses the major collection of Frederic Remington works in the world. Remington is recognized as the foremost artist of the Old West. The collection includes 14 bronzes, 70 oils, 140 original water colors and several hundred pen and ink sketches. The museum also houses his personal art collection, family history and artifacts.

Ogdensburg Command Performances, the Crane School of Music at Potsdam College and Music Theater North are popular theater attractions in the area. Other area attractions include the Seaway Trail, the Moses Saunders Power Dam, the Eisenhower Lock, and the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge.

Area residents enjoy youth and adult baseball and softball, ice skating, minor hockey, soccer and other organized sports. Ogdensburg Free Academy offers a full program of women's and men's fitness programs.

In winter, ice fishing, ice skating, cross country and downhill skiing and snowmobiling are available at many area facilities and state parks.

Spectators can enjoy collegiate sports, professional hockey and baseball in Toronto and Canadian football in Ottawa and Toronto. World class hockey, ski jumping, ice skating and bobsled events are regularly scheduled in Lake Placid, home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.
